Installing the Pickscan Android app
The Pickscan Android app is the handheld scanner operators use in the warehouse. It's a free download from the Google Play Store and works with every Pickscan platform integration — BigCommerce, Shopify, WooCommerce, and Linnworks.
Device requirements
- Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or later. Most commercial handheld scanners released in the last 8 years meet this.
- Camera — used for barcode scanning if you don't have a dedicated hardware scanner. Most modern Android devices have an adequate rear camera for barcodes.
- Internet connection — Wi-Fi or mobile data. Pickscan is an online app; it won't work offline.
A purpose-built Android barcode scanner (for example from Zebra, Honeywell, or a cheaper no-name model) is recommended for warehouse use — the hardware trigger is much faster than pointing the camera, and the ruggedised body survives day-to-day warehouse knocks. Pickscan works with any keyboard-wedge or intent-based hardware scanner.
Install steps
- On the Android device, open the Google Play Store.
- Search for Pickscan.
- Tap Install.
- When the install completes, tap Open to launch the app.
First launch
The first time you open Pickscan on an unconnected device, it shows the device-code entry screen. This is where you pair the device with your store — see Connecting your device with a device code.
Permissions
Pickscan requests the following permissions on Android:
- Camera — for barcode scanning from the device camera. Grant this when prompted.
- Location — used for audit logging of where scans happen. Grant this if you want location stamped on activity records; Pickscan still works without it.
- Network access — granted automatically.
Keeping the app up to date
Pickscan releases regular updates with new features and bug fixes. Leave auto-update on in the Play Store so every device in your warehouse stays on a current version.
